Bodywork For The Childbearing Cycle

For many women, the arc of a pregnancy will encompass some of the most rapid and intense physical, psychological, and emotional changes that can be experienced within any nine month period of time.  Carrying new life can be at once rewarding, fascinating, exhilarating... and exceptionally stressful and demanding.

Accommodating fetal growth literally shifts the center of gravity of a woman's body.  Pregnancy compresses her internal organs, and adds pressure to the pelvic floor.  To stand comfortably, to bend, to walk, to balance the body and maintain the ordinary activities of daily life, requires new physical effort that, over time, can create persistent muscular strain, tension, and fatigue.

Pregnancy massage can be a safe, effective way to relieve the common discomforts that accompany the childbearing cycle - by easing tension, relaxing tight muscles, improving circulation, and reducing physical and emotional stress.  Massage helps renew energy.  And, in releasing chronic tension from muscles of the lower back and abdomen, massage can be an important part of preparing your body for the birth of your child.

Massage during pregnancy can benefit both you, and your developing child.  Studies conducted by the University of Miami's Touch Research Institute reveal that receiving soothing touch helps to lower the levels of stress hormones in the uterus.  And in these studies, expectant mothers who were touched in gentle, supportive, and non-invasive ways experienced easier labor, fewer post-natal complications, and fewer premature births.
