Life Can Be Stressful
Our encounters with both the ordinary and significant events in our lives can produce stressful reactions that leave us emotionally frayed, and physically depleted. Over time, we may become vulnerable to doubts about our ability to cope, and find ourselves feeling overwhelmed, isolated, tired, and anxious.
Stress reactions can undermine our confidence, the quality of our work, and our relationships with friends and family. Stress can also have a profoundly negative impact on our physical well-being.
Feelings of threat - whether real, or imagined - send the body into high alert. Stress-related hormones rush into the bloodstream, muscles contract protectively, blood pressure elevates, breathing and digestion are disrupted, and the body shifts into a state of tension and vigilance.
Life provides us with many occasions to experience stress, and far fewer opportunities for a healthy release of tension. The stress we accumulate in the course of daily living can leave us feeling 'tied up in knots.'
